Citizens for Appropriate Transportation (CAT)
The Hostile
Pedestrian Environment needs to be Redesigned

The
photo shows Austin Boulevard looking toward the Austin Ramps. The state designed the interchange for motor
vehicles. Pedestrians from the north use
narrow sidewalks, cross the access ramps, and then enter the CTA Blue Line
Station, which is to the left of the Austin Ramps. A better design, with wider sidewalks, median
strips, a bus bay, and landscaping would accommodate motor vehicles and
pedestrians as well as transit buses.
Separating the ramps from the CTA Station is also a better design.
Similar problems for pedestrians exist at the
Harlem interchange.
