Tapers and Merge Ramps on the ExpresswayMERGE LANES INCREASE THE EXPRESSWAY WIDTH

The photo shows the view looking east from the Home Avenue Bridge - four blocks east of Harlem.  The nose of the taper is almost seven blocks east of Harlem Avenue.

A similar condition exists for the Austin ramps.

With traffic projected to increase on the Eisenhower Expressway, the merge lanes and the access ramps are likely to become longer.  Longer merge lanes and access ramps will increase the width of the expressway, bringing negative environmental impacts (air, noise, and grit) closer to residential neighborhoods.
