HOSTILE PEDESTRIAN
ENVIRONMENTS NEED TO BE REDESIGNED
The photo shows Austin Boulevard looking toward the Austin
Ramps. The state designed the
interchange for motor vehicles. Pedestrians
from the north use narrow sidewalks, cross the access ramps, and then enter the
CTA Blue Line Station, which is to the left of the Austin Ramps. A better design, with wider sidewalks, median
strips, a bus bay and landscaping would accommodate motor vehicles and
pedestrians as well as transit buses.
Similar
problems for pedestrians exist at the Harlem interchange.
The other roadways that cross the Eisenhower Transportation Corridor
also have similar problems, but without the access ramps.
